BeakGeek Basics

BeakGeek is a citizen science project that is researching simple tech/sensors that can integrate with web apps and social media to improve data collection.

I am going to give a quick presentation to the Fort Collins Internet Professionals this week so put together a few slides. BeakGeek is still very young but we are making some progress.

Golden Phoenix Revisited

The recent release of the Golden Phoenix After Action has caused me to do a bit of reflection on web technology and all the recent hoopla over Gov 2.0 - Golden Phoenix (GP) is a grass roots collaborative training event that started in Los Angeles in 2006. It is not an Exercise. It is a bunch of people at the tactical level coming together to train for crisis response in the Southern California Region.

Plodt: Simple Graph Using Twitter

This is a graph about my Drupal Love/Hate Ranking (0-10: 0 means I am banging my head on the table and 10 means I discovered Kung Fu Powers). It was created by the Plodt service using a simple key value pair syntax in my twetes - E.g. *drupal 9*. People are tracking things like how they feel about food and their mood. I am also testing it to see if we can get more Metanomy value by tracking things like birds on a feeder: http://plodt.com/beakgeek

See the Plodt site for full details: http://plodt.com

Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) Parser

CAP is an XML standard that is used to send alert messages around between government agencies. There are a few sources of ATOM/CAP feeds out there from the Weather Service and USGS, so I have been experimenting with parsing these feeds with Drupal's FeedAPI. There is still much work to be done with handling some of the unique namespaces that show up in these feeds, but it is a start.

We have a demo site up at http://ic.metanomy.org

Tent Cities In The US

Is it going to get worse before it gets better?

That is why we are doing what we do here at Metanomy.

Creative Uses For Twitter

I recently had a conversation with a friend about using Twitter for more than just micro-blogging. Not that micro-blogging is not without merit, but I am looking to develop tech with a bit more social oomph than what I had for lunch. Veggie burrito by the way.

I thought this blog entry was interesting: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/50-ideas-on-using-twitter-for-business/

And then I started looking around at Twitter Vote Report (which came to my attention via a Twete no less - thanks @ilabra): http://twittervotereport.com/
